The Role of Cyber Defense Technologies in Modernizing US Treaty Alliances within the Framework of the 2022 Indo-Pacific Strategy

This research paper aligns with the 2022 US Indo-Pacific Strategy and examines how to revitalize existing treaty alliances between the US and key Asia-Pacific partners to build cyber capacities while deepening their economic relationships to balance China in the region. Current US policy in collaboration with these five treaty partners– namely Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand– prioritizes traditional military capacity over holistic security arrangements. By assessing trends in cybersecurity, foreign direct investment, and technology manufacturing, the study aims to optimize these alliances to bolster allies' technological capabilities and mitigate vulnerabilities posed by China's increasing technological capacity, regional influence, and geopolitical ambitions.

Combatting Healthcare Scarcity in China

Addressing the global shortage of healthcare professionals is a critical challenge, particularly impacting low and middle-income countries. This essay explores healthcare scarcities, emphasizing geographic and age-related disparities, with a focus on China's aging rural population. The World Health Organization estimates a shortage of 4.3 million healthcare professionals, projected to reach 10 million by 2030. Geographic disparities, especially in rural areas, amplify health challenges, with lifestyle-related issues contributing to preventable health concerns. The elderly, comprising a growing population, face barriers in accessibility and affordability. Analyzing China's healthcare system, the essay reveals deficiencies in preventative measures, coverage, and quality. Proposing reforms, it advocates for targeted preventative campaigns inspired by successful models like the Million Hearts Campaign. Additionally, a patient-centered approach, modeled after the Netherlands' Horizon system, is recommended to efficiently categorize care and inform resource allocation. These reforms aim to decrease illness, enhance accessibility, and improve healthcare quality, providing a holistic solution applicable globally.

Southeast Asia is the Geographical Center of the US-China Struggle for Influence

Southeast Asia is the geographical center of the U.S.-China struggle for influence. Yet, despite the increasing geopolitical tension, Southeast Asian countries manage to maintain good relations with each other while preserving good relations with both Washington and Beijing. These countries also manage to get both superpowers to contribute to their growth and development. A huge factor contributing to this is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Thus, this paper will investigate how Southeast Asian countries, through ASEAN, cope with the increasing geopolitical tension in the Indo-Pacific region. It will discuss the overall hedging strategy that ASEAN member states employ when interacting with one another, as well as the U.S. and China. Then, the paper will focus on how Southeast Asian states engage in multiple levels of interactions with the U.S. and China in the larger Indo-Pacific region. Then it will determine whether this strategy is successful in ensuring the region’s neutrality amidst rising tension between Washington and Beijing, as the relevance of ASEAN in the region will depend on how it can maintain its image as a neutral organization. Consequently, the paper will propose recommendations for future U.S. foreign policy.
